Lead up to life on the road
In 2006 I went on my first trip to Thailand for 14 days. It was full of adventure and included a week long hill-tribe trek hiking in the mountains near Chaing Mai and staying with the locals in their villages.
The following year I vacationed in Hawaii for one week and then traveled to Bali for one month which included a one week stay on a boat that sailed to Lombok and Sumbawa.
I knew then that I preferred 'traveling' over 'holidaying'.
In 2008, my friend and I decided we would do the South-East Asia backpacker thing. No plans and no return ticket. We were just going to go with the flow and see where it took us.
We ended up traveling overland from Bali to Java, then to Malaysia and all of southern and northern Thailand. This took about three months and all of our savings… oh and there was a pet monkey thrown in there too!
Obviously life was never going to be the same back at home.
I had been running my own successful business for almost four years by then making a REALLY good income!
However I was not finding it as challenging anymore - even though it was the best job ever!!
I decided to move north to Brunswick Heads (Northern NSW in Australia for those of you who aren’t familiar with the island) to pursue a degree in Environmental Science.
This was and still is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and one of the most ultimate experiences I've ever had. I loved taking the long, solo road trip north to a destination where I hadn't even had housing lined up yet. But I made it happen and met a whole group of amazing people and made new life-long friends along the way. I loved that sense of accomplishment I had achieved with no help from family or friends.
This is where I eventually met Jamie. We had barely been together for two months before I bought us tickets to Indonesia for his birthday. It was just a short, fun surf trip but little did he know it was a taste of things to come.
The following year we decided we would get one way tickets to Indonesia and stay there for at least three months.
I originally wanted to do three months or longer in the USA but he was more interested in his surf trip so we compromised and visited the United States for one month before heading to Indo.
It was the ULTIMATE American road trip!
We hired a car and did the Pacific Coast Highway, Yosemite National Park, Northern California, north-west Washington and splurged on a cruise to south-east Alaska.
We fell in love with the USA! I didn’t want to leave. I was heart-broken when we did.
I made Jamie promise me we would come back the following year. And we did.
This brings us up to the present. We have been on the road for almost a year now.
We will be posting blogs from the start of our adventures to share the experiences and knowledge gained in regards to life on the road.
We will share with you information such as buying a car in the USA, obtaining U.S. visa's (for foreigners like ourselves), what life is like living in a van, how to road trip on a budget and of course show you the amazing places you simply must visit if you plan to road trip in the United States.
