Visiting Ferndale On The Northern California Coast
Nestled between Redwood forests and the fabled Lost Coast is Ferndale, a charming small town famous for its well preserved Victorian homes and storefronts. Ferndale, which was once named one of America’s prettiest towns is visited by people from all over to admire the spectacular architecture and the areas enchanting setting.
The ornate homes and buildings are sometimes referred to as ‘Butterfat Palaces’ due to their construction being attributed to the amount of wealth that was created here from the dairy industry.
Many of the buildings date back to the 1880’s and in fact the entire town is registered as a California Historical Landmark.
Notable buildings you must see include The Victorian Inn, The Gingerbread Mansion, and the Ferndale Library.
Main Street
Taking a stroll down Main Street is almost like taking a step back in time. Every shopfront’s façade displays an array of 19th century Gothic Revival, Italianate, Eastlake, and Queen Anne style architecture.
You can find art galleries, chocolate artisan shops, and even an old but still operating cinema.
Things To Do In Ferndale
Ferndale has a thriving art scene and there are quite a few fine art galleries you could visit including Ferndale Arts Gallery, The Blacksmith Shop & Gallery, and Artisan Alley Studio’s.
Historic landmarks you should not miss include the Ferndale Historic Cemetery, Fernbridge, and Fern Cottage. The Fernbridge spans the Eel River and is the longest functional, poured concrete bridge operating in the world and was prominently featured in the 1995 movie Outbreak. Fern Cottage is the picturesque home of Ferndale's founding Russ Family. The house still retains its original furnishing and guided tours are available to visitors.
Be sure to drive out to the Lost Coast and explore some of the wild beaches. The area is breathtakingly beautiful and you can explore the beaches along a rough road or find a hiking trail if you’re feeling adventurous. The area is very remote though so be prepared with a full tank of gas.
Staying Overnight In Ferndale
There are many elegant bed and breakfasts in town should you wish to stay overnight. The most popular would have to be the Victorian Inn which is located on Main Street.
Another good option is the Gingerbread Mansion, a brightly painted bed and breakfast which can be found a few short blocks from Main Street.
Getting To Ferndale
Ferndale is located about a ten minute drive off US Highway 101. Take the Fernbridge Drive exit where you will cross historic Fernbridge and from there it is less than five miles to the downtown area.
